Biffy Clyro

2009/31/January - Nosturi, Helsinki, FIN

***** / *****

Anything people had to say about Biffy Clyro before was new to me. Though I was aware of their existence I had never heard their music nor saw them live. Everything I had heard, though, was good; their live show was described as phenomenal as well as their sound was described as exceptional. It’s never too late to start listening to an old band and if anything, a state like this only gave Biffy Clyro a bigger opportunity to knock me off my feet, and oh man, did they...
What I discovered was a band that has a solid and warm way of approaching the crowd on stage. Without glittery background wall drops or basic speeches in the middle of the songs stating out that this is once again the best crowd in the whole wide universe, the band has a tight grip of everything they do on stage. Biffy Clyro plays pop rock the way it’s supposed to be played; they have a very professional touch to their instruments but are still obviously filled with glowing excitement of creating something new.
Creating new fresh sounds is in fact probably the biggest part of Biffy Clyro’s sound today. The band has learned to highlight the softest part of their sound in while creating exceptional bubbly riffs and inconspicuously embedding grand string instruments and chants in their songs. Their set list was built from the new songs as well as the old ones perfectly overlapping each other.
What goes with their latest album Only Revolutions probably also goes pretty much with their live performances; Only Revolutions presents an entity you can listen to shit loads of times without getting bored because it shows a new side of itself every single time and through little tricks gives little pieces of its own brilliance more and more every moment. This is, of course, what I learned after getting interested about the band and listening to the album after the show.
Now I can truly say, that just like their latest album, Biffy Clyro’s live performance also gives something new with every song making it impossible for the listener to get bored or to do anything else but focus on the live act that with every song presents something new and spectacular.
